- Sibelius’ Karelia Suite
- Franck’s Le Chasseur Maudit
- Elgar’s Prelude to The Dream of Gerontius
- Elgar’s Enigma Variations.
Conductor: Chris Holley
The Febrary 2017 concert combines a number of very popular and well known works. Sibelius’ three-movement Karelia Suite hardly needs any introduction, and nor does Elgar’s famous “Dream of Gerontius”, from which SBS will play the orchestral prelude. César Franck’s “Le Chasseur Maudit” (“the accursed huntsman”) is a hugely exciting tone poem about a count who dares to go hunting on a Sunday morning, in violation of the Sabbath, and this work very much deserves to be better known than it is. The concert is completed with Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations, including (of course!) “Nimrod”.
